Basket Weaving Klein Bottles

Description: When immersing a Klein bottle into three-dimensional space, one encounters the unavoidable issue of self-intersection. This poses a problem when trying to make a physical 3D-model, as common materials and techniques run into problems when self-intersecting, creating holes or “merging” the surface at the intersection. The goal of this project is to explore a different approach to modeling Klein bottles by using basket weaving techniques in order to highlight its structure, especially around its self-intersection, and to consider whether these techniques can be helpful in visualizing other mathematical objects.
